What to Expect When You Work with a UX Consultant

If you've never worked with a UX consultant before, it can be hard to know what you're actually signing up for. What will they do? How involved do you need to be? What does the end result look like?
Here's an honest look at what working with a UX consultant is actually like — at least the way we do it at User Minded Design.
It Starts with a Conversation, Not a Proposal
Before any work begins, we talk. I want to understand your business, your customers, and what you're actually trying to accomplish — not in a vague 'what are your goals' way, but in a specific, practical way.
What pages are people getting stuck on? Where are you losing potential customers? What does success look like for you in six months? What's been tried before and didn't work?
That conversation shapes everything that follows. It keeps the work focused on what actually matters to your business — not on what's trendy in design or what I happen to find interesting.
You'll Be Involved — But Not Overwhelmed
A lot of clients worry that hiring a UX consultant means endless meetings, constant back-and-forth, and spending more time managing a project than running their business.
That's not how this works. You'll be involved at the right moments — giving feedback on designs, reviewing copy, approving changes before they go live. But the day-to-day is mine to handle. That's what you're hiring for.
Expect Honesty
If something on your current site isn't working, I'll tell you — clearly and without softening it into meaninglessness. Not because I enjoy delivering bad news, but because honest feedback is what makes the work actually useful.
That said, I'm not here to tear things apart for the sake of it. I'm here to help you build something better. The feedback is always in service of that.
The Deliverables Depend on the Scope
Depending on what you need, deliverables might include a written audit with prioritized recommendations, updated website copy, design changes implemented directly on your platform, or a full new website built from the ground up.
We'll agree on exactly what's included before any work starts — no surprises.
It Ends With You Feeling Confident
Whether we're wrapping up a quick refresh or a full new website build, my goal is for you to finish the engagement feeling good about your digital presence — and like you understand it well enough to maintain it. That usually includes a walkthrough of any changes made and clear guidance on what to focus on next.
Good consulting leaves the client more capable, not more dependent.
